Brighton & Hove Albion defender Dan Burn is reportedly set for a late move to Newcastle United in a deal worth £13 million.

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle United are closing in on the capture of Dan Burn. The Brighton & Hove Albion defender has been pencilled in for a medical at St. James’ Park after the club negotiated a deal worth £13 million.

Burn is set to become Newcastle’s fourth signing of the January transfer window, following Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood and most recently, Bruno Guimaraes, who joined from Lyon on a permanent deal this week.

With a right-back, a centre-forward and a talented midfielder already in the squad, Eddie Howe was primarily looking for a new left-footed centre-back to accompany Jamaal Lascelles at the heart of the Newcastle United defence. One of their priority targets was emerging Dutchman Sven Botman, but LOSC Lille had no intention to offload their defensive stalwart this month.

It prompted Newcastle United to set their sights on Diego Carlos as an ideal alternative. But the deal for the Sevilla centre-back did not quite materialise. The same can be said for the club’s other defensive targets this month, including Benoit Badiashile and Dan-Axel Zagadou.

After failing to land their top targets, Brighton & Hove Albion’s Dan Burn has emerged as the final fallback option for Newcastle United. Even then, a move to St. James’ Park seemed unlikely when their initial offer was knocked back by the Seagulls. They had followed up with a £10 million offer, but it was also deemed low by the south coast outfit.

Ultimately, Brighton have finally agreed to a £13 million deal to sanction the sale of Burn, who offers vast experience in English football, having featured in a combined total of more than 200 matches during his time in the Championship and the Premier League.

In recent years, the 29-year-old has been one of the defensive lynchpins for the Brighton side that has made quite an impression under the leadership of Graham Potter. However, Burn might not be the last player to join Newcastle in this January transfer window, as the Magpies are reportedly in talks with Arsenal to sign Eddie Nketiah.

The young Englishman is determined for a new challenge after a disappointing start to life under Mikel Arteta. As such, he could be set for a reunion with former Arsenal academy teammate Joe Willock at St. James’ Park, although the deal hinges on Arsenal managing to sign a new forward before Monday’s deadline.
