Manchester United defender Phil Jones is reportedly inching closer to joining Ligue 1 side Bordeaux on loan this month.

According to Football Insider, forgotten Manchester United defender Phil Jones is closing in on a loan move to Ligue 1 side Bordeaux as the January transfer window draws to a close.

The 29-year-old is an excellent player but has seen injuries wreck what could have been an impressive career at Old Trafford. French club Bordeaux require a defender and have earmarked Jones as the man to help them fight off relegation this season.

As things stand, the 29-year-old is in advanced negotiations to make a move as the winter transfer window draws to a close. Bordeaux are increasingly confident that an agreement can be reached before the window closes on Monday.

Manchester United, for their part, are open to loaning the 29-year-old out. Jones is behind Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof in the centre-back roster at the Theatre of Dreams. The move to France will allow him to gain more playing time at the senior level.

Jones has played just one game for Manchester United all season. Injuries in his central defensive unit forced Ralf Rangnick to start the 29-year-old against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Jones gave a good account of himself on the night despite it being his first senior match since 2019. Despite being the club’s standout player on the night, he has failed to make more appearances for the Red Devils.

The Englishman is in the final 18 months of his contract at Old Trafford, and Rangnick has already given his blessings for him to improve his fortunes elsewhere. Not only will the prospect of regular game time improve Jones’s match fitness but also act as a sort of an audition for clubs interested in making a move for him in the summer.

Signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2011, Jones has made 225 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring six goals and assisting ten more in that time. He has also missed 205 games for Manchester United due to various issues simultaneously, giving a clear idea of his injury issues.

The 29-year-old is still young enough to play at the top level for more years. Hopefully, Jones can turn his luck around and resurrect a flagging career by joining Ligue 1 outfit Bordeaux.
