Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Uruguayan international Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus in a deal that can reach €25 million.

Juventus have issued an official statement on the club website confirming that midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has completed a transfer to Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur on the deadline day.

The 24-year-old arrived at Juventus in 2017 from South American giants Boca Juniors and quickly became a regular in the middle of the park. He made 181 appearances for the Bianconeri, racking up a tally of three goals and 18 assists.

Capped 46 times by the Uruguayan national team, Bentancur had seen his form dip in recent months, which led to him losing his starting spot in a few games under Massimiliano Allegri. And, the midfielder has now severed ties with the Serie A bigwigs, securing a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Lilywhites needed midfield reinforcements after Tanguy Ndombele left the club to re-sign for former club Lyon on loan. In addition to that, Giovani Lo Celso is also on the verge of leaving the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with a move to La Liga outfit Villarreal on the cards for the Argentine.

So, Antonio Conte’s side needed to add more bodies in the midfield department, which they have done with the capture of Bentancur. The reliable Fabrizio Romano reported that Tottenham have shelled out a transfer fee of €19 million to sign the 24-year-old, with the north London club also set to pay an additional €6 million in bonuses.

“Rodrigo Bentancur has swapped the city of Turin for London to continue his career. The Uruguayan midfielder, who joined Juventus in 2017, has left the Bianconeri for Tottenham Hotspur,” the statement from Juventus read.

Confirming the transfer, Tottenham sent out a statement saying, “We are delighted to announce the signing of Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus, subject to international clearance and a work permit. The midfielder has signed a contract with us until 2026.”

Bentancur’s capture has been swiftly followed by the announcement of another player in Dejan Kulusevski leaving Juventus for Tottenham Hotspur. The Swedish winger becomes the second signing of the January window for the Lilywhites as they look to make a push for a top-four finish in the Premier League under Conte.
