Tottenham have reportedly entered the race to sign Rodrigo Bentancur, with Aston Villa firmly in pursuit of the Juventus midfielder.

According to Sky Sports, Tottenham could look to hijack Aston Villa’s move for Rodrigo Bentancur, with the north London side aiming to sign the Juventus midfielder before this month’s deadline. Antonio Conte is seeking immediate reinforcements in different areas of his squad and could consider a move for the 24-year-old midfielder.

Tottenham are stepping up their efforts to bring in players before Monday’s deadline. The north Londoners wanted to bring in wide attackers in this window but have failed in their pursuit of Adama Traore and Luis Diaz so far. They now have switched their attention towards signing a central midfielder before the deadline.

The futures of current stars Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso are in doubt, with the pair expected to leave in the coming days. Lyon have an agreement with Tottenham for the Argentine midfielder, while the Frenchman could move to PSG.

Their departures are likely to leave Spurs short in the midfield area, and hence Antonio Conte is eager to sign at least one quality replacement. Rodrigo Bentancur has emerged on their radar, with Tottenham plotting a late move for the 24-year-old midfielder.

The big problem for Spurs in their pursuit is the competition in the form of Aston Villa. The Villans have already had an offer rejected by Juventus for Bentancur in the last few days, but the Midlands club are expected to go back with an improved offer.

Aston Villa are on course to meet Juventus’s demands for the star, with the Serie A giants asking for around £21 million in guaranteed payments for the Uruguayan midfielder. Aston Villa pose the biggest threat to Tottenham in this particular chase, but only time will reveal the outcome.

Bentancur himself is reportedly keen on joining Aston Villa, although Tottenham’s late interest could turn his head. Tottenham’s technical director Fabio Paratici will likely use his influence to make the signing happen, although they have to act quickly and make a substantial offer to blow Aston Villa out of the water.

It remains to be seen what transpires in the race to sign Bentancur, as the interest from Premier League clubs keeps growing by the day. Will he end up joining Aston Villa or Tottenham? It is a question likely to be answered before Monday’s transfer deadline.
