Newcastle United and Everton have reportedly registered interest in Bayern Munich playmaker Thomas Muller.

In one of SportBild journalist Christian Falk‘s claims, Newcastle United have apparently entered the race to sign Thomas Muller. They are joined by Everton in the pursuit of the Bayern Munich playmaker, with the clubs keen on adding some creativity in their final third.

It appears the two Premier League teams are likely trying to take advantage of Bayern Munich’s tricky contract situation with their players, as the Bavarians have recently struggled to convince Niklas Sule to remain in Munich amid interest from Chelsea and others. They are also tipped to lose Corentin Tolisso, whereas the future of Robert Lewandowski remains unclear.

A native of Bavaria, Muller is treated as footballing royalty in Germany. He is regarded as one of the best players to ever grace the Bundesliga and is a living legend of German football, having racked up over 600 competitive appearances for Bayern Munich. His tally of 223 goals and 238 assists are equally impressive.

He is, in fact, the all-time leader in the assists chart in the Bundesliga, with 61 of his 185 league assists coming in the last two and a half years. The attacking partnership between Lewandowski and Muller has helped Bayern maintain their dominance over German football while proving crucial in winning the treble during the 2019/20 campaign.

Muller’s meteoric success has not gone unnoticed, with Newcastle United among the clubs interested in his securing services. The Magpies are not targeting the German international in January, where they are embroiled in a relegation dogfight, but are hoping to entice him with a lucrative deal in the summer.

Providing they maintain their top-flight status, Newcastle united are expected to become the biggest spenders in the summer transfer window, with their new owners prepared to make them the most dominant club in Europe.

Everton’s interest in Muller, though, is slightly more surprising, as they are struggling with funds and have recently had to sack Rafael Benitez. The Toffees are in a tricky sporting situation as well, dawdling on the bottom end of the table, with the prospect of relegation looming large.

Either way, it is perhaps fair to point out that it is highly unlikely Thomas Muller will quit Bayern Munich anytime soon. As a local, the playmaker represents much more than just his footballing skills, and with Bayern slowly starting to recover their revenue, it is hard to imagine anything other than Muller signing a new contract in Bavaria beyond 2023.
