Aston Villa have reportedly stepped up their efforts to sign Rodrigo Bentancur from Serie A giants Juventus before the transfer deadline.

According to Football Insider, Aston Villa are expected to complete at least two signings before the end of the month, with a central midfielder’s arrival considered key to their season. They are in advanced talks with Juventus for 24-year-old Uruguayan midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, who could arrive at Villa Park before the window closes.

Steven Gerrard has wasted no time shaping his squad in the current window. The former Rangers boss only arrived around December and has since laid the marker on the team and has continued to look for solutions from the transfer market.

Despite already signed Philippe Coutinho on loan from Barcelona and completed the permanent transfer of Lucas Digne from Everton, Gerrard still wants to bring players in before the ongoing window slams shut. Aston Villa reportedly want a new midfielder and a central defender.

As for the midfield requirement, they are a bit short due to the absence of Marvelous Nakamba, who is expected to miss the majority of the season ahead due to a knee injury. Hence, Aston Villa have recently been linked with Rodrigo Bentancur, with the 24-year-old Juventus midfielder looking like a possible arrival.

Recent reports suggest Bentancur is keen on joining Gerrard’s squad this month as he looks to re-establish himself somewhere else. The Uruguayan international has played a great deal this season in Serie A, although only around half of his appearances have been from the get-go.

Villa had reportedly lodged an offer a few days ago and now seem to be in advanced talks with the Serie A giants over a late move. They might end up signing the Uruguayan international before deadline day, helping Gerrard to get his wish of adding a young, talented midfielder to his squad.

Aston Villa might also be on the hunt for Bentancur to replace Douglas Luiz, who is linked with Arsenal this month. The Gunners are keen on signing the Brazilian as Mikel Arteta seeks a top player in midfielder. Luiz has only 18 months left on his current deal, which could force Villa to cash in on him this month.

One way or another, Bentancur seems destined to join Aston Villa this month. The 24-year-old midfielder’s style could also suit the Midlands club in plenty of ways, and Gerrard could get a player to develop into a top-class Premier League star of the future.
