Atletico Madrid are reportedly ready to rival Arsenal for Dominic Calvert-Lewin as Diego Simeone views the Everton striker as a long-term successor for Luis Suarez.

According to Fichajes, Atletico Madrid are interested in Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with the La Liga champions plotting a move for the Everton striker. The Rojiblancos have considerable competition for the forward, with Arsenal said to be very keen on bringing him to the Emirates.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a hot name on the shortlists of clubs across England and possibly some European giants as well. The striker has the qualities that suit many teams and has been the subject of speculation since last summer.

Arsenal have been mentioned heavily as his prospective suitor in the winter transfer window. Mikel Arteta is looking to sign the Everton striker as a possible replacement for former captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. With the Arsenal boss looking at a specific profile of a forward, the Everton man certainly fits the Spaniard’s criteria.

The Gunners had cooled their interest this month as they chased Dusan Vlahovic rather unsuccessfully. Juventus have reportedly agreed on a deal with Fiorentina for the striker. Now Arsenal are turning their attention back to alternative options with Calvert-Lewin firmly on their radar.

Everton could demand a significant fee for their star striker, which could even go higher if it turns into a transfer battle. There certainly are hallmarks of a fight for the striker, with Atletico Madrid becoming the latest club to express an interest in the England star.

Diego Simeone’s priority in the summer would be to bring in a reliable, young striker into his squad. Atletico Madrid currently have Luis Suarez leading the line, but the Uruguayan’s days at the Wanda Metropolitano are numbered. The La Liga champions have other options on their list but would like to bring in Calvert-Lewin if the chance arises.

They have also been keeping tabs on Memphis Depay’s situation at Barcelona, and a late move for the Dutchman could become a possibility this month. There could be other strikers on their radar as well, as Simeone looks to refresh his forward line and draw the line over ageing forwards.

Their pursuit of Calvert-Lewin could be tricky at the moment, considering if Everton get ready to sell him, English clubs could get the precedence over foreign teams. The striker himself might prefer to stay put in the Premier League than experiment abroad, and Arsenal could be his ideal destination if things fall in place.

In the end, it will also depend upon what sort of money the La Liga giants are prepared to spend. Considering Calvert-Lewin will carry a huge price tag, it surely will test Atletico’s resolve over a move, and as things stand, Arsenal might still have the upper hand, this month or in the summer.
