Newcastle United are ready to make an improved bid for Atalanta star Robin Gosens after the Italians turned down their initial approach.

According to Sport Witness, Newcastle United are prepared to push on to sign Robin Gosens in this window, as they ready a new bid for the German international. After Atalanta rejected their initial approach, the Magpies are preparing an offer worth €30 million.

Newcastle United are working hard behind the scenes to bring their preferred targets through the door before the transfer deadline. While there are still some days to go before the window shuts, the club hoped to make plenty of progress at this stage of January.

Even though they have managed to sign Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood this month, many key areas still need addressing. Newcastle United’s primary concern would be to sign quality players who would help them fight a relegation battle and ensure their top-flight status next season.

Their win over Leeds United at the weekend was a major boost and they are hoping to bring in at least one central defender, midfielder and a left-back before deadline day to continue moving in the right direction. They have identified Atalanta’s Robin Gosens as the ideal left-back candidate to improve their ranks.

Gosens has been with Atalanta since 2017 and has been pivotal to Gian Piero Gasperini’s style of attacking football at the club. Despite the German international being a left-sided midfielder by trade, he’s often deployed as an attacking left wing-back in Atalanta’s system.

He plays a similar role in the German setup, and his output has impressed plenty of clubs across Europe. Inter Milan are keen on the star along with Manchester City and Barcelona, who had shown an interest in the German international before.

However, in the current climate, Newcastle United are the only club to have made a viable offer to Atalanta for Gosens. The Italian side have already rejected the first reported offer, as the Magpies now prepare an improved bid worth €30 million for the left-sided player.

As reported earlier, Newcastle United have also tabled a lucrative contract for Gosens. If he is to join the Premier League side, the German could seemingly triple his earnings compared to his current salary at Atalanta.

It may be a tempting offer for the player, but he will also be leaving Champions League football for a Premier League relegation battle. If Gosens and others can help Newcastle avoid the drop in May, they may well look forward to a strong season in 2022/23 as the club are expected to be the heaviest spenders in the summer.

For now, Newcastle will have to convince Atalanta over a sale and make a reasonable new offer to the Italians. Gosens currently remains out with a hamstring injury sustained in late September, although he should be back to full training soon.
