Rodrigo Bentancur is reportedly open to leaving Juventus to complete a switch to Aston Villa before the January transfer window ends.

According to Italian journalist Rudy Galetti, Rodrigo Bentancur could be open to joining Aston Villa before the January transfer window closes. A stumbling block could be Juventus’s desire to sign a replacement before letting the 24-year-old Uruguayan midfielder leave for the Premier League.

Aston Villa remain keen to bolster their squad even further and are keen on signing a defensive midfielder before the close of the transfer window. With little time left, Steven Gerrard wants the club to bring in specific players as they aim to push on into the top half of the Premier League table.

This month, Aston Villa made bold moves by bringing in Philippe Coutinho on loan from Barcelona and Lucas Digne on a permanent transfer from Everton. Gerrard now wants to bring in a defensive midfielder to compete with incumbent star Douglas Luiz.

Yves Bissouma was Villa’s primary target this month. The Birmingham club have since baulked at Brighton & Hove Albion’s £50 million asking price and are looking at alternatives. Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is considered an important target who fits the bill in terms of age profile and price tag.

Juventus value Bentancur at £16 million, which is reasonable enough for Aston Villa to conclude a deal. The Uruguayan international is reportedly looking for a way out of the Serie A club as he seeks to become a regular starter elsewhere and enjoy a new challenge.

And now, in a boost to Aston Villa’s hopes, Galetti suggests that Bentancur is open to joining the Midlands club this month. However, the stumbling block is Juventus’s need to sign a replacement before letting the 24-year-old midfielder leave the club.

The Bianconeri now have a serious need to raise cash after agreeing a massive deal with Fiorentina for Dusan Vlahovic. Bentancur, among others, might be seen as a source of raising funds, especially in this market.

The ball certainly seems to be in Aston Villa’s court, who should be looking to seal a transfer imminently. Any unforeseen delays might cost the club the services of the 24-year-old, as Bentancur’s teammate Arthur Melo is also looking for an exit from the Allianz Stadium, complicating matters from Juventus’s perspective.
