Liverpool and Manchester City are reportedly in contention to sign PSV Eindhoven’s emerging talent Cody Gakpo in the summer.

According to a report from Dutch news outlet, Voetbal International, Cody Gakpo is facing an uncertain future at PSV Eindhoven. The explosive winger is expected to soon extend his contract with the club until 2026. But that has not stopped top European clubs like Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Liverpool to keep close tabs on the 22-year-old Dutch international’s situation.

It appears Gakpo has already held exploratory talks with both Manchester City and Liverpool regarding a potential move to the Premier League in the summer. The two English giants are closely monitoring the development of the youngster, who has been one of the rising stars in the Eredivisie this term.

A native of Eindhoven, Gakpo has been a part of PSV’s senior side for quite a while now. He had made his actual breakthrough during the 2019/20 campaign, featuring in 25 league matches. But it is his tally of six goals and ten assists in 15 matches this season that has caught the attention of prospective suitors, with the attacker playing a vital role in helping the club fight for the title league.

A left-winger by trade, the 22-year-old Dutch international has been involved in a total of 60 goals in 116 competitive matches. His contributions this season have been particularly critical following the departure of Donyell Malen in the summer.

However, it seems Gakpo himself might not remain at PSV for long, with Liverpool and Manchester City emerging as potential destinations in the summer. The Reds, for one, are actively looking for reinforcements in the market, in the wake of Mohamed Salah’s uncertain future at the club. The Egyptian’s current deal at Anfield expires in less than 18 months and there has not been much progress in contract talks.

Liverpool have been linked with a move for star players such as Christopher Nkunku. But in Cody Gakpo, Jurgen Klopp could find himself an interesting cost-effective alternative, who certainly has the quality to shine in the Premier League.

As for Manchester City, they are looking for a direct replacement for Ferran Torres. The Spaniard moved to Barcelona earlier in January, creating a massive void in the club’s offensive unit. While the Citizens are unlikely to sign any new players in January, someone like Gakpo could prove to be an excellent signing for Pep Guardiola, who will be looking to add competition for record signing Jack Grealish.
