Tottenham and Newcastle United are reportedly set to be locked in a transfer battle for Diego Carlos, with Spurs trying to hijack the Magpies’ pursuit.

According to an exclusive report by The Sun, Diego Carlos is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur over a late move in the January transfer window. Spurs have joined Newcastle United in the race to sign the Sevilla defender and will look to steal a march on their fellow Premier League club in pursuit of the Brazilian.

Diego Carlos has established himself as one of the most dependable defenders in La Liga since joining Sevilla from Nantes in July 2019. In the last two and a half years, the 28-year-old has forged a solid central defensive partnership with Jules Kounde, with the duo becoming highly-coveted centre-backs in Europe as a result.

The Brazilian defender has made 120 appearances for Sevilla to date, with 29 outings coming in the ongoing campaign. But Carlos’s time at the Andalusian club appears to be drawing to a close amid strong links with Newcastle United. And the Magpies now face stiff competition from fellow Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur in his pursuit.

Carlos, for his part, is reportedly keen on joining Newcastle United, with personal terms a mere formality at this point. The Magpies desperately need to sign at least one centre-back before the transfer deadline, considering they have the second-worst defensive record in the Premier League this season.

With Jamaal Lascelles’s stock dropping with every game and Fabian Schar facing an uncertain future at St. James’ Park, Newcastle could be in danger of becoming even more porous at the back if they fail to sign a central defender. But Tottenham’s emergence in the race to sign Carlos has come as a blow for Newcastle United.

Like Newcastle, Tottenham could do with a centre-back this month, considering none of Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez, and Japhet Tanganga inspire a lot of confidence in their abilities. In addition, Tanganga is also linked with a possible move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with AC Milan set to ramp up talks to sign him.

Spurs have been heavily linked with a move for Matthias Ginter this month, with Carlos also emerging as a viable target. According to The Sun, Tottenham will back Antonio Conte with the required funds to sign Carlos, which leaves Newcastle United with very little time to strike a deal with Sevilla for the Brazilian. An intriguing last ten days of the transfer window await Carlos, Sevilla, Spurs and Newcastle.
