Newcastle United could turn their attention to Everton’s Yerry Mina after missing out on top defensive targets.

According to TeamTalk, Newcastle United could turn to Everton defender Yerry Mina if they fail to sign some of their top targets this month. The Magpies are keen on defensive reinforcements and the Colombian is an option with 18 months left on his deal.

Newcastle United are stepping up their efforts to bring in defenders in the current window, although they have achieved little success in signing new players. They remain in pursuit of their top targets but might have to turn their attention towards alternatives as the window draws to a close.

After signing Kieran Trippier earlier this month, the Magpies have found little success in pursuing primary targets. Burnley first refused to entertain offers for James Tarkowski as they did not want to strengthen a relegation rival, while their chase of Lille’s Sven Botman ended in disappointment.

They looked close to signing Sevilla’s Diego Carlos, with the defender now keen on signing with the Premier League side. However, Newcastle have already seen an offer turned down by the Spanish club, although they hope a new bid worth £30 million could do the trick.

Despite promising signs on that pursuit, it’s been reported the club will look to sign two centre-backs in this window. They have been linked with names such as Freiburg’s Nico Schlotterbeck, who will be costlier than other options. They have another name on the list of alternative targets, with Everton’s Yerry Mina the latest to  feature.

Mina has been in the ranks of the Merseyside club for some years now. While he may be considered an experienced head and somewhat important for the Toffees defence, things have been different this season. Former manager Rafael Benitez has barely selected him in the team, which has led to speculation regarding his future.

Injuries and a loss in form have contributed to his lack of playing time this term, and with 18 months left on his deal, Mina’s future looks vulnerable. With the recent sale of Lucas Digne, Everton have shown that they are willing to entertain offers for their players if the price is right.

With the club set to appoint a new boss shortly, they might look to undo some of the mistakes of past regimes. While Newcastle may not yet consider Mina a primary option, they might turn to the Colombian if their pursuit of other important players falls through.

Everton could entertain offers, and it remains to be seen what value they place on Mina if Newcastle come knocking on the door. The Colombian is vastly experienced in the Premier League and he could be a welcome addition to the Magpies, who are desperate to reinforce their defensive unit ahead of a relegation dogfight.
