Diego Carlos has reportedly agreed personal terms with Newcastle United, although Sevilla are yet to accept a proposal for the central defender.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Diego Carlos has agreed personal terms over moving to Newcastle United this month. The big issue remains the transfer fee, as Sevilla are yet to accept any proposal from the Magpies, even though the Premier League club has floated some offers for the Brazilian.

The Diego Carlos transfer saga is turning to be quite the tedious affair, with Sevilla and Newcastle United failing to agree on a reasonable fee so far. The Magpies were considering pursuing other defenders, and once it became clear they were unachievable, they switched their attention towards the 28-year-old Brazilian.

Bringing in one or two central defenders is a priority for Newcastle in this window, with Eddie Howe hoping to strengthen his squad ahead of a relegation battle. They spent most of their time chasing Lille’s Sven Botman, only for the Ligue 1 champions to decide against selling the Dutch defender.

Many other high profile names, like Nico Schlotterbeck have been emerged on Newcastle’s radar since the start of the month, and it seems like they have fixed their attention on Carlos. The Brazilian defender has been an important player for Sevilla, who have been one of the best performers in La Liga this term.

However, Sevilla might be open to letting Carlos leave if they get a reasonable sum for the 28-year-old defender. Newcastle have already had a £25 million bid being knocked back, with reports suggesting the La Liga giants were seeking nearly double that fee.

It may be an unreasonable sum for a 28-year-old, and Newcastle United are certainly not prepared to pay an exorbitant sum for the Brazilian. However, the Magpies are readying a new offer, which is considerably higher and expected to be in the region of £30 million.

The Premier League outfit expects Sevilla to accept the new proposal, although reports suggest that may not necessarily be the case. Carlos has a substantial release clause in his deal, although the Spanish side may accept an offer of around £45 million.

However, with Carlos keen on joining Newcastle, he has agreed personal terms with the Premier League club. Reports suggest the Tyneside outfit will be willing to pay him a lucrative salary, more than what he earns at Sevilla.

Both clubs need to agree on a reasonable fee and get the wheels on this transfer rolling for the deal to materialise. Time is running out for Newcastle as they view Carlos as an important piece heading into a tough relegation battle.
