Real Madrid are reportedly weighing up the prospect of signing 25-year-old Spanish midfielder Fabian Ruiz from Serie A giants Napoli.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Fabian Ruiz has emerged on the radar of Real Madrid once again, this time over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The 25-year-old midfielder could leave Serie A giants Napoli after the ongoing season.

Fabian Ruiz joined Napoli from Real Betis in July 2018 and has since established himself as one of the best midfielders in Serie A. At the same time, the player has also established a foothold in the Spanish national side, becoming a key figure for Luis Enrique.

To date, the 25-year-old has made 148 appearances for Napoli, chipping in with 20 goals and 13 assists in the process. Over the years, some of the biggest clubs in Europe have noticed Ruiz’s exploits, with Real Madrid at the forefront of the queue of prospective suitors ahead of the summer transfer window.

At Real Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti has some of the best midfielders in Europe at his disposal, with his options being bolstered further by the arrival of Eduardo Camavinga last summer. But Luka Modric and Toni Kroos are approaching the end of their glittering careers, while Dani Ceballos and Isco face uncertain futures at the Santiago Bernabeu.

So, Real Madrid must sign a creative midfielder at the earliest opportunity to replace Ceballos and Isco while also laying down a succession plan for the two midfield stalwarts, Modric and Kroos. To that end, several midfielders have recently been linked with Real Madrid, including Lovro Majer, with Ruiz also a viable target.

Florentino Perez is also eyeing Ruiz over a possible summer move to reinforce the squad’s Spanish quotient. Dani Carvajal is the only regular in the national team who plays for Real Madrid. So signing the 25-year-old will solve a dual purpose for Real Madrid, although they will face stiff competition for him.

Recent reports have claimed that Premier League heavyweights Manchester United are leading the race to sign Ruiz, meaning Real Madrid will need to step up to secure his services. All in all, an intriguing transfer battle could ensue to prise the Spanish international away from Napoli. But with his contract having just 18 months left to run out, the club that signs him could land him on a cut-price fee.
