Liverpool have reportedly turned their attention towards Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as an alternative to the other priority targets on their radar.

According to Calciomercato, Liverpool could look at the possibility of signing Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as a long-term midfield reinforcement. The Reds might look at signing the 26-year-old Serbian midfielder from Serie A club Lazio as an alternative if they fail in pursuit of their primary targets.

Since the summer transfer window, Liverpool have been chasing a reliable midfielder but have nowhere near concluded a deal. They are currently sweating over the renewal of talisman Mohamed Salah, who has 18 months left on his contract. But at the same time, Liverpool must strengthen their options in other departments.

They have a few primary options in mind, including Jude Bellingham and Kalvin Phillips as far as English midfielders are concerned. At the same time, other targets from overseas clubs are also on Liverpool’s radar.

Recently, they have been linked with a host of options, although most could be measured as media speculation at best. The links with Eduardo Camavinga of Real Madrid could be taken with a pinch of salt, and signing the likes of Bellingham and Phillips might be more realistic.

Jurgen Klopp wants a long-term option in the middle of the park as there may not be enough left in the tank in James Milner or Jordan Henderson for the next phase of Liverpool’s planning. Meanwhile, players such as Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have not proven their mettle since signing on big-money deals.

A new name has emerged as a potential alternative if Liverpool fail in their pursuit of signing Klopp’s primary targets. The report suggests Liverpool could target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, possibly in the next window as a long-term midfield reinforcement.

The suggestion is based upon the duration of Milinkovic-Savic’s contract, which expires in 2024, which could supposedly give Liverpool the edge in negotiations. The Serb has long been linked with a move to the Premier League, and if the Reds do make an approach, the 26-year-old might jump leagues this time.

There is plenty of interest in Milinkovic-Savic, with Juventus, Real Madrid and Manchester United among those keen on the midfielder. The Serbian international himself was reportedly eager to play for the Spanish giants, although Camavinga’s arrival and the potential renewal of Luka Modric might scupper a move for the Lazio midfielder.

It remains to be seen how much the Serie A giants would demand for their key star in the summer. The 26-year-old will have two years left in his contract, which could still allow the Biancocelesti to ask for a sizeable chunk in transfer fees, although Liverpool will look to strike a financially reasonable deal.
