Borja Mayoral has reportedly emerged as an alternative to Anthony Martial for Sevilla, who are keen on signing the Spaniard from Real Madrid.

According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Borja Mayoral is the subject of interest from Sevilla over a possible move in the ongoing transfer window. The La Liga giants are eyeing the Real Madrid forward, currently on loan at AS Roma, as an alternative for Anthony Martial.

Despite enjoying a solid first season on loan, Borja Mayoral is going through a difficult time at AS Roma. The 24-year-old has gone tumbling down the pecking order since Jose Mourinho’s arrival as the new Roma boss last summer, and he is now a bit-part player for the Serie A giants.

The Real Madrid loanee has garnered only 249 minutes of game-time this term, raking in just one goal and one assist in the process. With his career headed nowhere at Stadio Olimpico, there is a high chance that the Spaniard will return to Real Madrid before being offloaded before the January transfer window slams shut. And La Liga giants Sevilla have set sights on the player.

The Andalusian heavyweights are keen on signing a striker this month as Youssef En-Nesyri is in Cameroon representing Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations. The 24-year-old’s absence leaves Rafa Mir as the only recognised striker at Julen Lopetegui’s disposal.

The former Real Madrid manager is thus keen on bringing a centre-forward into his squad, with Anthony Martial a key target for Sevilla. But Manchester United recently knocked back Los Nervionenses’ initial approach for the French international, and it is unclear if they will present a fresh offer anytime soon.

At the same time, the La Liga giants are keeping their options open, with Borja Mayoral emerging as a key target for the club. In addition to the Real Madrid forward, Riccardo Orsolini is also on Sevilla’s radar as a possible alternative to Manchester United.

Keeping their options open should keep Sevilla in good stead, especially with Mayoral also a target for Getafe, Real Betis and Crystal Palace. But there is a high chance that Sevilla’s preference would still be to sign Martial instead of going for the Real Madrid forward or Orsolini.
