David Ospina is reportedly prepared to join Real Madrid and could arrive at the Santiago Bernabeu on a free transfer in the summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid have been handed a major boost in pursuit of David Ospina. The 33-year-old is ready to run down his contract with Serie A giants Napoli before joining Los Blancos on a free transfer in the summer transfer window.

David has been a consistent performer for Napoli since arriving from Arsenal in August 2018. Napoli initially signed the Colombian goalkeeper on a season-long loan deal before he joined the Serie A club permanently a year later. But the veteran shot-stopper has had to share game-time throughout his stint with the Partenopei, never once featuring more than 30 times in a season in Naples.

The 33-year-old has been in solid form in the ongoing campaign, keeping ten clean sheets in 19 Serie A appearances, with his performances enabling Napoli to remain in title contention. However, Ospina’s stint with the club could end in the summer, with his contract expiring at the end of the season. Such a situation has captured the attention of Real Madrid.

Real Madrid could be forced to enter the transfer market for a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window, as Andriy Lunin’s frustrations have boiled over. The Ukrainian international was once hailed as a long-term solution between the sticks for Los Blancos but has been unable to usurp the colossal Thibaut Courtois.

With Courtois going from strength to strength in the last few years, Lunin has only raked in appearances in the Copa Del Rey. The 22-year-old is thus keen on leaving Real Madrid to resurrect his stuttering career, with Ajax reportedly interested in signing him to replace the outgoing Andre Onana.

Lunin’s departure would force Real Madrid to scour the transfer market for a replacement, with Ospina emerging as a viable target. And the Spanish giants have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of the 33-year-old, who is keen on joining them in the summer transfer window.

While Ospina will have to suffice with the same role as Lunin, the Colombian goalkeeper has no qualms being Courtois’s backup. And the transfer will likely be completed on a Bosman move, with the veteran goalkeeper likely to run down his deal with Serie A outfit Napoli.
