Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Chris Wood, with Burnley not opposed to selling the 30-year-old striker this week.

According to a report by Daily Telegraph, Chris Wood is the subject of interest from Newcastle United over a possible move in the ongoing transfer window. After receiving an approach for him, Burnley might be open to selling the 30-year-old striker to their fellow Premier League club this month.

Chris Wood has spent most of his senior footballing career in England, representing ten clubs thus far. The New Zealand international’s most successful stint has come with Burnley, with the experienced striker going from strength to strength since arriving in the Premier League a few years ago.

The 30-year-old has made 165 appearances to date for the Clarets, garnering 53 goals and nine assists in the process. During his ongoing four-and-a-half-year stint with Burnley, Wood’s progress has not gone unnoticed, with Newcastle United setting sights on him over a possible January move.

The Magpies are pressing hard to transform their squad greatly in the ongoing transfer window following their big takeover last year. Currently mired in a relegation scrap, Newcastle United will need significant investment in several positions in the first-team squad to escape from the drop zone in the coming months.

The Tyneside club’s first signing under the new regime has already been completed, as Kieran Trippier arrived from Atletico Madrid and made his debut last week. Bolstering the attacking unit has become a priority for Newcastle United, especially with talismanic striker Callum Wilson sidelined for two months due to a calf injury.

Wilson’s injury has left Eddie Howe bereft of a prolific striker at his disposal, which is why the Magpies have been forced to dip their toes in the transfer market for one this month. Several strikers, including Swiss attacker Noah Okafor, have already been linked with Newcastle United, with Wood also a viable target.

An enquiry has already been submitted to Burnley, with the Clarets not necessarily opposed to the idea of selling Wood even though Newcastle will be one of their rivals in the Premier League relegation scrap. For his part, the 30-year-old is open to joining Newcastle United, and a January move could be in the offing.

Wood is not the only Burnley player linked with Newcastle United, who also have James Tarkowski and Ben Mee on their radar. However, the New Zealand international is the likeliest candidate from the club to depart Turf Moor to move to St. James’ Park in a cross-Premier League January switch.
