Barcelona are reportedly weighing up the prospect of re-signing Luis Suarez from Atletico Madrid on a Bosman move in the summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Luis Suarez is the subject of interest from Barcelona over a possible Bosman move in the summer transfer window. Xavi Hernandez is keen on reuniting with the Atletico Madrid striker in the 2022/23 season.

Luis Suarez joined Atletico Madrid in September 2020 in a shock move following an illustrious six-year spell with Barcelona. The switch from one La Liga heavyweight to another has worked out brilliantly well for the 34-year-old, who played a leading role in Los Rojiblancos’ league triumph in the 2020/21 season.

Suarez has made 63 appearances for Atletico Madrid to date, amassing 29 goals and five assists in the process. But the veteran Uruguayan striker could end his stint with the Colchoneros after just two years, with his contract expiring in the summer.

The Catalan giants are already in the market for a striker following Sergio Aguero’s forced decision to call time on his career. With the Argentine no longer a part of his squad, Xavi Hernandez needs Barcelona to enter the transfer market for a striker. That is because Martin Braithwaite and Luuk de Jong do not inspire much confidence in their ability to spearhead the attack consistently.

Several strikers have recently been linked with Barcelona, with Alvaro Morata reportedly their key target. Reports have also claimed that the two parties have reached an agreement on personal terms, only for other factors to create a stumbling block for Barcelona.

Whether Barcelona will sign any striker in the January transfer window remains unclear, but they will need to invest in a natural centre-forward in the summer. Martin Braithwaite faces an uncertain future at Camp Nou amid links with AS Roma, while Luuk de Jong’s loan spell will end this year.

So while Erling Haaland is among the targets that represent a possible long-term solution, Suarez’s return could also be a step in the right direction. But with his Barcelona exit in 2020 being rather acrimonious, it is unclear if the 34-year-old will be open to returning to Camp Nou after ending his stint with Atletico Madrid, despite Xavi Hernandez’s insistence to re-sign him.
