Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais are keen on landing Tottenham Hotspur star Hugo Lloris on a free transfer in the summer of 2022.

According to Francebleu, French top-flight side, Stade Rennais are keeping tabs on Tottenham Hotspur skipper Hugo Lloris.

The goalkeeper is one of the best shot-stoppers of his generation and has been an excellent servant for the North London side for close to a decade. During this time, he represented Spurs 394 times across all competitions, keeping 134 clean sheets.

At 35, Lloris is not getting any younger and has lost a step in his performances of late. While the veteran remains a reliable keeper on most days, errors have crept into his game, and he has shown signs of his waning abilities.

Despite that, the Frenchman continues to don the moniker of the first choice in goal for Tottenham. With just months left on his current deal, both the club and the player face a pivotal summer.

New manager Antonio Conte has already expressed his desire to keep Lloris around as he plans to build something special at the club. The player, however, is yet to pen new terms and is now free to agree on a pre-contract agreement with interested foreign clubs.

One of the teams in the fray for Lloris are Stade Rennais. The Ligue One side’s owner Francois Pinault appears intent to land the 35-year-old in the summer. However, the Roazhon Park outfit are in no position to match the wage packet Lloris currently earns at Tottenham.

While Rennes have denied making any move for the Frenchman, there appears to be something brewing behind the scenes. The club’s hierarchy seems keen on landing the player and believes a deal might be possible, albeit complicated.

Signing a player of Lloris’ abilities would be a win for Rennais and could give them the foundation to improve in the 2022-23 season. The Ligue One club is currently in fourth place and are a decent if not unspectacular side.

Lloris has been a sensational player for Tottenham over the years and has repeatedly shown himself to be a dependable last line of defence. At 35, it is time Spurs start looking for a successor and allow the Frenchman to move on.

The goalkeeper still has some football left in him and could do well with the comparatively less intense surroundings in Ligue 1, where former club OGC Nice are also interested. Whether Rennes land their man or Tottenham convince him to extend his deal remains to be seen.
