Manchester City are in contention to sign Mattias Svanberg in January, with the Bologna midfielder also being courted by Tottenham and Inter Milan.

A recent report from Calciomercato has offered an update on the future of Mattias Svanberg. The Bologna starlet has recently emerged as a target for Inter Milan, prompting his agent Martin Dahlin to hold an emergency discussion regarding a potential sale. There is a possibility that the midfielder’s current contract could be extended for two years, but failure to reach an agreement could see him depart the club in January.

Along with Inter Milan, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur have submitted an enquiry for the Bologna midfielder. Svanberg’s current deal expires in 2023, but he is likely to cost significantly more than the €15 million the Rossoblu had demanded almost a year ago.

The Swede, after all, has emerged as one of the best-performing midfielders in Serie A this term. He has been involved in 19 league matches so far, making quite an impression with his work ethic and ability to win the ball back for his team. But what makes him a standout performer is the technical prowess that allows him to progress the ball upfield.

During his ongoing three-and-a-half-year spell at Bologna so far, Svanberg has notched up over 100 competitive appearances. His experience combined with his technique and skill has led to interest from several clubs, as Manchester City and Tottenham continue to vie for his services in January.

Tottenham, in particular, are in the market for a new midfielder that can provide competition for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp. The two players have improved considerably under Antonio Conte, but they lack the ability to provide ball progression in the middle of the park. It is perhaps why the Lilywhites have been linked with a move for other midfielders such as Corentin Tolisso.

In Svanberg, Conte could find himself a raw talent who has the potential to become one of the best in the Premier League. But it appears Spurs are set to face stiff competition from Manchester City, who are equally desperate for a new midfielder in January.

The Citizens have been linked with a fresh move for Gavi, but the youngster has his heart set on an extended stay at Barcelona. It could force Pep Guardiola to shift his attention towards Svanberg, who could be an ideal addition to the club’s midfield unit, especially with Fernandinho’s contract expiring in the summer.

With Inter Milan also very much in the fix, it remains to be seen where Svanberg ends up this month. There is also a possibility that the 23-year-old signs a new contract with Bologna and stays put in Italy.
