FC Porto’s breakout sensation Luis Diaz could reportedly be on the verge of a mid-season move to Liverpool for a deal worth £60 million.

According to The Sun, Liverpool are closing in on the capture of Luis Diaz. They are expected to reach an agreement with FC Porto over a deal worth around £60 million to become the club’s first signing of the ongoing transfer window. Diaz has a release clause worth £67 million, but Liverpool are confident they can snap up the Colombian attacker for a slightly lower fee.

A native of Barranqas, Colombia, Diaz has established himself as one of the most highly sought-after attacking talents in Europe over the past 12 months. He moved to FC Porto back in 2019, joining the club for a low-money fee.

Although the winger was involved in just 11 league goals in each of his first two completed seasons in Portugal, he had a spring in his step last summer, scoring four goals in Copa America. Diaz’s contributions in the attack helped Colombia finish third, while the player himself ended as the tournament’s joint top-scorer, alongside Gianluca Lapadula and Lionel Messi.

His exploits in Copa America was the head-start Diaz was looking for heading into the new season. The results have paid dividends, with the attacker scoring 12 goals in 15 league appearances so far. He has made a solid impression in the UEFA Champions League as well, notably starring in the two games against AC Milan.

Diaz’s performances have not gone unnoticed, with Liverpool prepared to pay a handsome sum this month. The Colombian international has emerged as an ideal attacking reinforcement option as the club looks to deal with the Africa Cup of Nations-related absences of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Liverpool’s likely capture of Diaz may not bode well for other clubs, though. Alongside the Reds, Manchester United were among the clubs interested in securing the services of the FC Porto attacker this month. However, it appears the Red Devils will have to shift their attention to other alternatives.

Meanwhile, at Anfield, the arrival of the Colombian could result in a transfer carousel. Divock Origi, in particular, is expected to leave Liverpool in January amid interest from Lazio, among other top clubs across Europe.
