Chelsea striker Timo Werner is being lined up as a potential replacement for superstar Erling Haaland by German giants Borussia Dortmund.

According to a report from Fichajes, Borussia Dortmund are starting to prepare for life without star striker Erling Haaland by identifying potential candidates to replace him, with Chelsea ace Timo Werner emerging as one.

Haaland has been with Dortmund for two years now, having arrived from RB Salzburg in January 2020. Since then, he has taken the footballing world by storm with his goalscoring exploits, having plundered 76 goals and 20 assists from 75 matches across all competitions.

Widely regarded as one of the most lethal forwards in the game, Haaland is being pursued by the who’s who of European football. Indeed, the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea, Manchester United, PSG, Manchester City have all been linked with the Norwegian international at some point, and it is looking increasingly likely that the 21-year-old will be on the move in the coming summer.

While Dortmund remain hopeful of retaining him beyond the summer, they are also planning for the scenario where Haaland moves on and have identified three potential targets to replace him. RB Salzburg’s Karim Adeyemi is on the radars of the Black and Yellows, with talks to sign him already underway, while there have also been links to AFC Ajax hitman Sebastien Haller.

Now, Chelsea striker Timo Werner is also on the agenda at Signal Iduna Park as a viable option to replace Haaland as the main man upfront. Arriving at Stamford Bridge in 2020 from RB Leipzig, Werner started life in London in an explosive fashion. However, his form in front of goal has been on a decline since, as he has been guilty of missing straightforward chances throughout his spell with the Blues.

His profligacy in front of goal meant that Chelsea went out and splashed a club-record fee for Romelu Lukaku this past summer. The Belgian has become the first-choice striker at Stamford Bridge, despite his own recent problems on and off the field. With Kai Havertz also seemingly ahead of Werner in the pecking order, there have been speculations over the German international’s future.

Barcelona and Bayern Munich have been touted as interested parties recently, with Borussia Dortmund also showing an interest in his services. While he may have struggled in England, Werner is a proven commodity in Bundesliga and had enjoyed a lot of success during his time with RB Leipzig. It remains to be seen if the Black and Yellows make a move to sign him or focus their attention elsewhere.
