Newcastle United have reportedly identified 28-year-old Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos as the ideal alternative for Sven Botman.

According to Daily Telegraph, Newcastle United are in the market for Diego Carlos. The 28-year-old Sevilla centre-back has emerged as a top defensive target for Eddie Howe, as he looks to add more quality to the side after replacing Steve Bruce earlier this season.

Newcastle United are already on the verge of securing their first signing of the new regime, in the form of Kieran Trippier. The Atletico Madrid right-back is soon expected to complete his medical at St. James’ Park after the club agreed a deal with the Spanish champions.

With the Trippier move almost done and dusted, Newcastle are expected to shift their attention towards a centre-back. Howe was ideally keen on signing Sven Botman, but it appears Newcastle United’s reported €35 million approach was rebuffed by LOSC Lille. The French champions have no intention of selling their star player in January, even on a loan deal.

It has forced the Magpies to look for alternatives in the market, and that is where Diego Carlos comes into the fray. The Sevilla centre-back has been in top form for the past couple of years, showcasing his strength and defensive work rate to help Julen Lopetegui’s men consistently compete for the top four spots in La Liga.

Los Nervionenses have even emerged as a potential title contender in La Liga this season, largely thanks to the defensive combination of Carlos and Jules Kounde. While Sevilla are already facing a battle to keep hold of the latter, amid interest from Chelsea, it appears they may also have a fight on their hands as they look to retain the services of Carlos.

With 116 competitive appearances for Sevilla and a solid track record in La Liga and Ligue 1, the Brazilian represents excellent quality. Standing at 1.86m, his imposing presence at the back makes him an intimidating figure for the opposing attacker while giving him a considerable advantage in aerial duels. The 28-year-old could thus be a smart addition to Newcastle’s defensive unit.

The Magpies, though, are open to other alternatives as well. In addition to Carlos, they have been linked with a shock move for Barcelona’s Eric Garcia, while Paris Saint-Germain defender Abdou Diallo could be another option. So it will be exciting to see how the club plans to upgrade the ranks in defence this January.
