Getafe and Real Madrid have reportedly held talks over the possibility of engineering a January deal for 28-year-old forward Mariano Diaz.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Mariano Diaz has emerged on the radar of Getafe over a possible move in the January transfer window. The Azulones have already submitted an enquiry over the prospect of a winter move, but Mariano is not interested in leaving Real Madrid anytime soon.

Mariano Diaz has spent nearly ten years with Real Madrid across two different spells. However, in those two stints, the 28-year-old has managed to turn out only 66 times for Los Blancos, as he has been primarily used as a backup striker ever since he first broke into the first-team squad.

The same has been the case in the ongoing campaign, as Mariano has garnered only 130 minutes of game-time across four appearances. With his career headed nowhere, there is a sense that the player could be on his way out of Real Madrid to seek a new challenge. And the Merengues’ fellow La Liga club Getafe could offer Mariano such a challenge.

Quique Sanchez Flores has plenty of strikers at his disposal at Coliseum Alfonso Perez. However, despite having five options for the two centre-forward berths in his side, the Getafe manager is keen on bolstering his side’s offensive unit with the addition of a new striker in January.

The Azulones’ need for a striker is particularly urgent because Enes Unal is the only player to have performed consistently in the final third. Getafe’s striker situation is so bad that their second highest goalscorer this season has only two goals to his name. So, Mariano is a viable target for the club to that end, as they look to secure their La Liga status in the second half of the season.

During the recent game between Getafe and Real Madrid at Coliseum Alfonso Perez, the former took the opportunity to enquire about Mariano’s availability. And Real Madrid would be open to parting with the 28-year-old forward in the January transfer window.

However, Mariano, who has several other suitors like West Ham United, Leeds United and another La Liga club in Sevilla, has no intention of leaving Real Madrid. So, Getafe will need to set sights on another striker if they are to reinforce their attack this winter. Meanwhile, Getafe could still sign a player from Real Madrid, with Antonio Blanco linked with a possible January loan move.
