Real Madrid reportedly view Pau Torres, valued at around €50 million by La Liga rivals Villarreal, as an alternative to Antonio Rudiger.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Real Madrid will be keeping their options open despite closing in on signing Antonio Rudiger on a Bosman move next summer. Villarreal defender Pau Torres is viewed as an alternative to the Chelsea defender, with his price tag ranging between €40 million and €50 million.

Pau Torres has taken no time to establish himself as one of the best defenders in La Liga, despite only making his breakthrough at Villarreal in the 2019/20 season. Now a mainstay at the back for the Yellow Submarine, the 24-year-old has also established a foothold in the Spanish national side.

To date, Torres has made 109 appearances for Villarreal, chipping in with six goals and four assists along the way. The Spaniard’s progress has not gone unnoticed, with some of the biggest clubs in Europe, including Real Madrid, setting their sights on him.

Recent reports had claimed that Real Madrid’s interest in Torres had ceased to exist. However, as per Fichajes, the 24-year-old is viewed as a viable alternative to Antonio Rudiger, the chief defensive target for Los Blancos next summer.

Widespread reports have even suggested Real Madrid and Rudiger have reached a verbal agreement to complete a Bosman move next summer. However, with the Chelsea defender being a highly sought-after player in the transfer market, it behoves Real Madrid to keep their options open.

To that end, Torres is a viable target for the Merengues, who could create a formidable central defensive unit consisting of the Spaniard, David Alaba and Eder Militao. Signing the 24-year-old will not cost Real Madrid a bomb either, with La Liga rivals Villarreal demanding between €40 million and €50 million to part with him.

However, the primary objective remains to seal a free transfer for Rudiger. Keeping that in mind, it remains to be seen if Real Madrid can secure the services of the Chelsea defender on a Bosman move next summer or if they are forced to turn their attention towards a possible €50 million deal for Torres instead.
