Manchester United are reportedly willing to shell out as much as €20 million to secure the signing of River Plate and Argentina forward Julian Alvarez.

According to a report from Spanish publication SPORT, Manchester United are ready to pay up to €20 million in order to sign Argentine sensation Julian Alvarez from River Plate in the January transfer window.

Alvarez signed for the River Plate youth setup in the summer of 2015 and rose through the ranks to break into the senior team in 2018, at the age of 18. Since then, he has gradually grown into a regular in the lineup under Marcelo Gallardo, producing a return of 36 goals and 25 assists from 96 appearances in all competitions thus far.

Alvarez, in particular, enjoyed a stunning 2021 campaign, bagging 24 goals and 15 assists from 46 matches across all competitions. He finished as the top scorer in the Argentine top flight with a tally of 18 strikes from 21 games. His growth and achievements have put him on the radars of elite clubs in Europe, who are lining up to sign him in January.

Manchester United are among the teams interested in luring Alvarez away from River Plate in the upcoming window. The 20-time English champions bolstered their attack in the summer with the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho. However, reinforcements could be needed ahead of the second half of the campaign.

Anthony Martial has grown frustrated with his lack of game-time and has asked the club to sanction a sale. At the same time, Edinson Cavani has also been linked with an exit in January, with Barcelona intent on signing the 34-year-old. With Ronaldo set to turn 37 in over a month and Marcus Rashford struggling for form, Manchester United could do with another striker apart from Mason Greenwood.

Alvarez, to that end, would be a viable target for the Red Devils, considering his rich vein of form, young age and limitless potential. Recent reports had indicated that Manchester United already made an offer for the five-time capped Argentine international, but those claims seem to be wide off the mark.

Now, though, the report from SPORT indicates that the Premier League heavyweights are ready to act on their interest in Alvarez and would be willing to offer a sum of around €20 million to sign him from River Plate. With his contract expiring at the end of 2022, the Argentine outfit may well be forced into cashing in on him. It now remains to be seen whether Manchester United end up getting their man in the winter window.
