Everton are reportedly among the clubs keen on the services of Borussia Monchengladbach’s wantaway midfielder Denis Zakaria.

According to 90 min, Everton have submitted an enquiry for Denis Zakaria. They intend to sign the 25-year-old Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder, who is set to leave the Bundesliga club when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Zakaria’s soon-to-be free agent status has put multiple clubs on red alert. The player has already opened talks with Barcelona regarding a Bosman move in the summer, although it appears the Catalans are now set to face stiff competition from a myriad of English clubs, including Everton.

The Toffees are in the market for new midfielders after a disastrous start to the campaign. Their marquee midfielder Andre Gomes has struggled with injuries throughout his spell at Goodison Park, whereas Jean-Philippe Gbamin has fallen out of favour under Rafael Benitez.

It has accentuated the need for a new midfielder, with Everton notably being linked with a move for Glen Kamara, among many other talented players across Europe. However, in Denis Zakaria, the Merseyside giants could land themselves an absolute gem.

With almost 150 competitive appearances for Gladbach under his belt, the Swiss international has already proved himself in the Bundesliga. His performances were, in fact, critical in the club’s success under previous coach Marco Rose, while his solid midfield partnership alongside Granit Xhaka notably helped his nation secure a direct ticket to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, ahead of Italy.

It makes Zakaria an appealing target for Benitez next summer when the Everton boss will be keen on truly rebuilding his squad. However, the Toffees are set to face stiff competition from West Ham United and Liverpool in the pursuit of the 25-year-old midfielder, with Arsenal, too, involved in the chase.

The report also mentions that the Swiss international favours a move to a club bigger than Gladbach as he wants to consistently play in the Champions League, potentially ruling Everton out of the contest.

Zakaria, though, won’t be the only Gladbach player leaving the club in the summer. Matthias Ginter also recently announced his departure from Borussia Park at the end of the season. The German has already attracted interest from almost all top clubs across Europe, but it will be interesting to see if Everton join the chase, given the defender is also available on a free transfer next summer.
