Barcelona will reportedly battle Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid to sign Matthias Ginter, who will leave Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer.

According to a report from Fichajes, Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter is set to spark a transfer war between Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid in the summer window.

The German defender has been with Die Fohlen since 2017 when he arrived from Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund. During his four-year stay at the club, Ginter has established himself as a mainstay in the side and one of the best in the league. However, his time at the club is coming to an end, with his contract running out at the end of the season.

Ginter officially confirmed earlier this week that he would not be signing a new deal, and clubs are now lining up to secure the signing of the 27-year-old on a free transfer. Barcelona have been linked with a move for the German international and will now have to face competition from Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Barcelona’s interest in Ginter stems from the fact that club icon Gerard Pique is not getting any younger and has shown signs of slowing down of late. Furthermore, both Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti are out of favour. They could leave either in January or at the end of the season, creating a vacancy in the defensive department.

A defender with proven international pedigree, in the peak years of his career and available on a free transfer, Ginter becomes an appealing target for the Catalan heavyweights. However, signing him will not be straightforward due to the interest in his services from Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid.

Bayern Munich are in the market for a new centre-back amid speculations surrounding the future of Niklas Sule. The German star is out of contract at the end of the season, much like Ginter, and has been linked with an exit from the Allianz Stadium. In order to replace the towering centre-half, the Bavarian giants are now believed to be eyeing a Bosman move for Ginter.

As for Atletico Madrid, they have struggled defensively this season in the absence of Stefan Savic and Jose Maria Gimenez. Both Felipe and Mario Hermoso have been sub-par this term, contributing to their poor start to their La Liga title defence. And Diego Simeone is looking for an upgrade on his defensive options, making Ginter a viable to consider.

The report, however, does add that Bayern Munich might be the slight favourites in the race to sign the 27-year-old as they would afford him the opportunities to win titles and stay in his homeland. So, Barcelona will have their task cut out to beat the German champions for the signing of Ginter.
