Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Cagliari midfielder Nahitan Nandez.

According to Calciomercato, resurgent Premier League side giants Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a major boost in pursuing Uruguayan midfielder Nahitan Nandez.

The 26-year-old moved to Serie A from Boca Juniors in 2019 and has since made 88 appearances for Cagliari, scoring four goals and assisting nine more. A versatile player, Nandez can fulfil several roles in various positions across the board.

With Antonio Conte leading a resurgence of sorts, Tottenham look primed to make a run at a top-four finish. They are currently in the sixth spot and could move to the fourth position should they win the two games in hand.

One aspect that Spurs can do with improving is their squad depth and the January transfer window provides them with the opportunity to do so. The midfield could do with a natural ball-carrier, and Nandez’s ability on the ball with his impressive dribbling skills make him a potentially shrewd addition.

While the likes of Oliver Skipp, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Harry Winks have impressed, an injured Giovani Lo Celso and an out of sorts Dele Alli have had limited impact providing an impetus in attack.

Conte and Fabio Paratici are familiar with the Italian top flight and will have a good idea of what Nandez brings to the table. The midfielder has a €36million clause in his contract. There is a possibility that the price could be driven down, which comes as a boost for Spurs, who could be landing themselves a solid player on the cheap.

It appears to be a departure of Uruguayan players at Gli Isolani. Diego Godin and Martin Caceres are both on their way out of the exit door and could soon be followed by Nandez. While the Italian side would like to keep hold of the 26-year-old, they have a tough job in doing so given the interest he has garnered from other teams.

Tottenham will need to beat off interest from defending Italian champions Inter Milan, who are keen on Nandez’s services. Whether it is because of the uncertainty surrounding his future or not, he has started just two of Cagliari’s last five games in the league.

The Italian side are currently in the 19th spot and look set to battle relegation in the second half of the season. Given what is at stake, they will be keen to keep their best players. But Nandez is likely to be on the move next month and it remains to be seen if he chooses to be a part of Conte’s revolution in North London.
