Barcelona and Jose Gaya are reportedly in discussions over a possible €25 million move in next summer’s transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Jose Gaya continues to reject all proposals for a contract renewal by Valencia and could depart the Mestalla in next summer’s transfer window. Such a situation has handed a major boost to Barcelona, who have opened talks with the Spanish international’s agent Alberto Toldra.

Jose Gaya has been with Valencia since joining the club’s academy over a decade and a half ago in 2006. And only six years after arriving at the Spanish club, the defender made his first-team breakthrough in 2012. Since then, the Spaniard has become a pivotal figure for club and country while becoming Los Che’s captain at the onset of the 2020/21 season.

To date, the 26-year-old has turned out 275 times for Valencia, chipping in with eight goals and 33 assists in the process. The Spanish international’s progress has attracted the best clubs in Europe over the years, with Barcelona one of his long-term suitors. And with Gaya’s contract running out in a little over a year, his time at the Mestalla could draw to a close soon.

The interest from Barcelona is understandable, considering Jordi Alba is on the wrong side of 30 and approaching the final phase of his career. And recent reports have claimed that Barcelona could sell the Spanish international as they look to initiate a squad overhaul in next summer’s transfer window.

With Alejandro Balde making slow progress and yet to establish a foothold in the first-team squad since being promoted at the beginning of the ongoing campaign, it behoves Barcelona to invest in a new left-back. To that end, Gaya is a viable target for the Blaugrana, seeing as he is one of the best left-backs in Europe.

The Catalan giants now seem to be stepping up their efforts to secure the services of the Spanish international. With the 26-year-old set to enter the final year of his Valencia contract next summer, Barcelona could have the chance to sign Gaya on a cut-price fee. According to the report, Los Che will likely demand around €25 million to part with their prized asset.

Barcelona and Gaya are already in talks over the prospect of a move in next summer’s transfer window, with his agent Alberto Toldra being contacted by the club. And with Gaya rejecting several contract offers by Valencia, contrary to recent reports, a move to Barcelona could be likely. It remains to be seen if the Blaugrana can land the Spaniard next summer.
