Real Madrid have set their sights on Reece James, with Los Blancos prepared to fork out €60 million for the Chelsea star.

According to Fichajes, Reece James has emerged as a shock target for Real Madrid. The Spanish giants are apparently scouring the Premier League to solve their problems at right-back, with the Chelsea star, in particular, identified as the ideal option.

The report suggests Real Madrid are even prepared to fork out €60 million. But with Chelsea in a position to rebuff the attempts to sign the star defender, Florentino Perez may have to convince the player before making an attempt to snap him up from Stamford Bridge.

The club’s recent interest in James is understandable, though, with coach Carlo Ancelotti looking to find a proper long-term replacement for Dani Carvajal. The highly-experienced Spanish international has struggled with his fitness in recent years, which has forced the club to rely on the services of the makeshift option in Lucas Vazquez at times.

In an attempt to add more competition for Carvajal next season, Real Madrid have been recently linked with a move for Benjamin Pavard. But the Bayern Munich defender has had a disappointing spell in Bavaria so far, failing to live up to his potential. With that in mind, Los Blancos are now eyeing a more successful option in the form of James.

A product of the Chelsea youth academy, James has flourished since his return to Stamford Bridge in 2019 after a loan stint at Wigan Athletic. He has become one of the undisputed first-team regulars under Thomas Tuchel,  notably helping the club win the UEFA Champions League last season.

Over the past couple of years, the English international has impressed the onlookers with his offensive quality. But he has also made an impression with his defensive discipline. His ability to operate as the right-sided centre-back of a back three is further indicative of his versatility, making him an appealing option for Real Madrid.

However, as mentioned earlier, Florentino Perez has hit task cut out as he looks to convince the player to move to Santiago Bernabeu next summer. Chelsea, too, are expected to do everything they can in order to avoid the Englishman leaving Stamford Bridge, especially amid reports suggesting a potential exit of Antonio Rudiger.

Along with the German international, the defensive trifecta of Thiago Silva, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta all have their contracts in West London expiring at the end of the season. Given the situation, Chelsea are unlikely to entertain the possibility of losing another one of their key components in the summer.
