Newcastle United are reportedly weighing up the prospect of signing Everton defender Mason Holgate in the January transfer window.

According to a report by Sky Sports, Newcastle United will be prioritising the addition of a centre-back and a right-back in the January transfer window. To that end, the Magpies have set their sights on Everton utility man Mason Holgate, who is one of several defenders on their radar.

Mason Holgate joined Everton from Barnsley in August 2015 and has since made gradual progress in his career. While the 25-year-old has proven himself as a utility man due to his ability to play across the defensive line, his versatility has been his bane. That is because he has been unable to nail down one spot in the side thus far.

To date, Holgate has made 120 appearances for Everton, chipping in with two goals and four assists along the way. In the last couple of years, it has appeared as if the player is finally starting to realise his potential by becoming a regular feature for the Toffees. However, if clubs like Newcastle United have their way, Holgate could soon be leaving Everton.

Newcastle United will be prioritising signing a centre-back and a right-back in the January transfer window to shore things up in the defensive unit. A fragile backline has been the undoing for the Tyneside club thus far in the ongoing campaign, which is why the eagerness to bolster the defence makes sense.

As far as centre-backs are concerned, Joe Rodon features prominently on Newcastle United’s shortlist. Other players like Jason Denayer, Matthias Ginter and Sven Botman also remain high on Newcastle’s radar. On the right-back side of things, one player has emerged far and away as the priority.

Kieran Trippier is a key target for Newcastle United, and the Magpies are reportedly closing in on securing his services in the January transfer window. However, with other Premier League clubs also keen on signing Trippier, an alternative must be sought. To that end, Everton utility man Mason Holgate seems to be a viable target for Newcastle United.

The 25-year-old could be a one-stop solution for the Magpies, as he can play as a centre-back and a right-back equally adeptly. However, it is unclear if Everton will be open to the idea of selling Holgate to Newcastle United in the January transfer window. So, it remains to be seen if Newcastle can sign the versatile defender from Everton this winter.
