Brazilian giants Corinthians have reportedly submitted a contract proposal to Manchester United ace Edinson Cavani, who is also a target for Barcelona.

According to a report from Brazilian outlet Central do Timao, Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani has received a contract offer from Corinthians amidst strong interest from La Liga giants Barcelona.

Cavani signed for Manchester United in the summer of 2020, arriving on a free transfer after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired. The 34-year-old enjoyed a fine debut season at Old Trafford, bagging 17 goals for the Red Devils, prompting the club to hand him a new one-year contract till the summer of 2022.

However, the ongoing campaign has been a frustrating one for Cavani as he has struggled with fitness problems. At the same time, he also has fallen behind Cristiano Ronaldo in the pecking order, leading to reduced involvement in the first team. His situation at Manchester United has alerted several clubs in Europe and South America ahead of the January transfer window.

Cavani has been heavily linked with a January move to Barcelona, who are in the market for a new striker. The Catalans have had to deal with a plethora of injury issues in attack, while the early retirement of Sergio Aguero has come as a major blow, too, leaving them short in numbers in the No. 9 slot.

So, even though they are on the verge of signing Ferran Torres from Manchester City, the Blaugrana remain keen on adding a proper striker to their ranks, with Cavani emerging as a target. Reports have indicated that Barça are in advanced negotiations with the Uruguayan international, but could now face the prospect of missing out on him.

It is because Corinthians have swooped in with a contract offer for the veteran centre-forward. The Brazilian giants are also on the lookout for a new striker and have identified several targets like Diego Costa, Luis Suarez and Cavani. The report states that the club have held extensive talks with the Manchester United superstar’s agent Walter Guglielmone and submitted a contract proposal.

It is also claimed that the deal offered by Corinthians is better than the one that Cavani has received from Barcelona. And an opportunity to return to South America and be closer to home could appeal to the 34-year-old, which would stack up the odds in favour of the Brazilian outfit.

However, it will also be interesting to see if Manchester United are willing to sanction an exit for Cavani, especially considering that Anthony Martial is also expected to be on his way out of Old Trafford next month.
