Real Madrid are reportedly closely monitoring the situation of Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, intending to make a summer move.

According to a report by Daily Mail, Joe Gomez is the subject of interest from Real Madrid over a possible move in next summer’s transfer window. The Spanish giants are keeping tabs on his situation at Liverpool as their search for a centre-back continues.

Joe Gomez joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in June 2015 and has since had his battles with a spate of injuries. The Englishman has been blighted by several long-term fitness issues, including two knee injuries that kept him out for most of his first two seasons with the Reds. However, the 24-year-old has battled back admirably and was a key part of Liverpool’s Premier League title-winning campaign.

But the arrival of Ibrahima Konate has hurt Gomez’s prospects, especially as he has been slow in his recovery from his latest injury setback. As a result, the English international has turned out just ten times for Liverpool this season, totalling 426 minutes of game-time. The player’s situation has now been noticed by Real Madrid.

The Spanish giants are reportedly in the market for a centre-back heading into next summer’s transfer window. That is because Real Madrid chose to replenish the void left by the departures of Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane by signing only one central defensive option in David Alaba ahead of the 2021/22 season.

While Alaba has settled in well, his recent absence after testing positive for COVID-19 has perfectly highlighted the need to sign a centre-back next summer. The thought process behind the eagerness to sign a central defender makes sense. Apart from Eder Militao and Alaba, Nacho is the only reliable option at Carlo Ancelotti’s disposal, especially with Jesus Vallejo deemed surplus to requirements.

With Nacho a backup option at best and on the wrong side of 30, Real Madrid’s need to sign a centre-back has been accentuated. To that end, the Spanish giants have been linked with several central defenders, including Niklas Sule, Antonio Rudiger and Jules Kounde, with Gomez also a viable target.

Injury woes notwithstanding, the Liverpool defender has shown enough promise to be viewed as a long-term solution for any team. While he has been linked with a January move to Aston Villa, the 24-year-old is likely to stay put at Liverpool for the remainder of the campaign before taking a call on his future. It remains to be seen if Real Madrid can come into contention to sign Gomez next summer.
