Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly in contention to sign Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland, a target for Real Madrid.

According to a report by Sky Sport Germany, Real Madrid could face stiff competition from Liverpool in the race to sign Erling Haaland. Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City might also court the 21-year-old Borussia Dortmund attacker.

Erling Haaland has taken no time to establish himself as one of the best strikers in Europe. The Norwegian attacker only burst into the limelight two years ago with his exploits for Red Bull Salzburg in the first half of the 2019/20 season. However, since joining Borussia Dortmund in January 2020, the youngster has taken his game up several notches.

The 21-year-old has an astonishing record of 76 goals and 20 assists in just 75 appearances for the Bundesliga heavyweights. Suffice to say, Haaland is a player who could improve most teams in the continent bar a select few. And two clubs that are keen on signing the player are Real Madrid and Liverpool.

The Spanish giants hold a long-standing interest in signing Haaland, having considered a move for him before he joined Dortmund. Real Madrid’s continued eagerness to secure the services of the Norwegian international makes sense, despite Karim Benzema’s exploits in recent years.

After all, the French attacker is 34 years old and approaching the final phase of his glittering career. So, it behoves Real Madrid to lay down a succession plan for Benzema, which explains the interest in Haaland, with the youngster also in favour of joining them. On the other hand, Liverpool’s need to land someone like Haaland could be explained by the absence of a natural striker from Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

While Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota have been excellent in playing through the middle, either in a false nine role or otherwise, Klopp does not have an out-and-out centre-forward at his disposal. So, it makes sense that Liverpool could be in contention to sign Haaland next summer, although it is unclear if they will have the required funds to prise the 21-year-old away from Dortmund.

In addition to Real Madrid and Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City might also launch the offensive for Haaland. So, with a transfer battle setting up, it will be interesting to see if Dortmund can keep hold of the young striker. It remains to be seen if Haaland decides to end his stint with the Bundesliga heavyweights come summer, with the choicest of clubs to select as his next destination.
