Barcelona reportedly have reached an agreement in principle with Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani over a potential move in January.

According to a report from SPORT, Barcelona have an agreement in place with veteran Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani over a transfer in the upcoming January window.

It is no secret that Barcelona are in the market for reinforcements in the attacking unit after a sluggish start to the season. The Catalans have been hit hard with injuries in the squad, with the likes of Ansu Fati, Martin Braithwaite, Ousmane Dembele and Memphis Depay all spending time out on the sidelines at some stage.

Barcelona also had to see summer signing Sergio Aguero announce early retirement after being diagnosed with a heart condition. With Luuk de Jong likely to be offloaded in January, the Blaugrana are on the lookout for new strikers who can take over the mantle of being the main goalscorer of the team and ease the burden on the likes of Fati and Depay.

Numerous players have been linked with a move to Camp Nou, but Cavani’s name has been doing the rounds quite regularly of late. Recent reports had indicated that Barcelona were in advanced talks with the veteran striker over a January move. It now seems like the negotiations have ended positively for the club, with an agreement reportedly reached.

Cavani has been with Manchester United for close to fourteen months now after signing in October last year on a free transfer after his contract with PSG had run out. The centre-forward proved to be a valuable signing for the Red Devils. He netted 17 goals in his debut season, helping the club finish as runners-up in the Premier League and the UEFA Europa League.

However, game-time has proven hard to come by for the Uruguayan international this season due to the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho. Furthermore, Cavani himself has had to deal with injury issues, leading to his reduced role in the squad at Old Trafford. A proven goalscorer with a wealth of experience, he can be a good short-term fix for Barcelona.

Cavani is expected to sign an eighteen-month contract with the Catalan giants. He is likely to be on relatively low pay for the rest of the ongoing season, although there is expected to be an increment in his wages for the next season. With the striker’s set to expire at the end end of the season, there is the possibility that the Red Devils decide to let him leave for free if he pushes for a transfer.

Even though an agreement is believed to be in place between the player and the club, James Ducker of The Telegraph has claimed that Barcelona are yet to make any approach or enquiry to Manchester United about the signing of Cavani. So, it remains to be seen if the deal sees the light of the day in the upcoming transfer window.
