Ruben Neves has played a key role this term in Wolves’ improved form under new manager Bruno Lage. The Portugal midfielder has been pivotal to their success as the Midlands club find themselves three points shy of sixth place. Wolves will be dreading any potential offers for their star, although an attractive one could turn their heads.
They reportedly evaded a few offers in the summer when Arsenal and Manchester United showed interest and could be set to demand a fee between €40-50 million, given Neves has a contract lasting until 2024.
Chelsea, who are reportedly keen on signing Neves in January, are one club for whom the transfer fee might not be an issue. The Portugal international’s immense experience in the Premier League is key to this chase, while his ability to influence games is an added factor.
Thomas Tuchel has issues with his Chelsea midfield, with many first-teamers either underperforming or enduring fitness issues. Jorginho has been the only constant presence in the middle, but the Italian has had many different partners in the position.
N’Golo Kante, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Matteo Kovacic have all suffered injuries at some stage this season, which has ensured Chelsea do not have a consistent partnership in midfield. Neves has proven to be a robust option in the middle of the pitch, who can control the area on his own at times.
The Portugal international is adept defensively and potent in attacking the ball, which makes him a likeable talent. So, the heavy interest from several top clubs across Europe, including Chelsea, comes as no surprise.
