Fallen giants Valencia are seeking a reunion with Manchester United star Juan Mata when his contract expires in the summer of 2022.

According to Fichajes, Spanish top division side Valencia are keen on bringing back Juan Mata when the player’s contract at Manchester United expires in the summer of 2022.

The 33-year-old is one of the finest players to come out of the Mestalla. He made a name for himself with Los Che before moving to Chelsea in 2011. He spent a little over two years at Stamford Bridge before moving to Manchester United in the 2014 January transfer window.

Mata has proven to be a dependable player at Old Trafford and has made 276 appearances, scoring 51 goals and assisting 47 more. The Spaniard’s standing has taken a knock in the past few years, but he remains an important veteran who adds much-needed experience and depth to the squad.

However, his contract at Old Trafford expires next summer, and as of yet, there is little to indicate that he will remain a part of Ralf Rangnick’s plans for the Red Devils. With his time in England drawing to a close, a return home could be on the cards.

Mata has a better chance of obtaining regular playtime if he returns to La Liga. Given the riches at Rangnick’s disposal, it is difficult to see the Spaniard be given the nod, especially if everyone is fit. While the Valencia management team seem sold on Mata, the final decision rests on the manager’s shoulders.

Despite being 33, Mata has shown himself capable of competing at the top level. While the pace and power of the Premier League may be beyond him, the style of football in Spain could be more to his strengths.

Whether manager Jose Bordalas also sees it the same way remains to be seen. While Mata will not be a long term option, he could be a player who can add much to Los Che from the word go. His experience, leadership and guile will be key additions to the Valencia side that has lacked inspiration.

Not only does Mata offer much on the field but could also be signed for free. A hero during his time at the Mestalla, Mata could ensure that his career comes full circle with a return home. What the future holds for the Spanish ace is anyone’s guess.
