Newcastle United are ready to rival Inter Milan in the race to sign Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter.

According to Calciomercato, Newcastle United are preparing a fresh move for Matthias Ginter. The Borussia Monchengladbach defender has recently emerged as a transfer target for Eddie Howe, as he desperately looks for defensive reinforcements in the upcoming January transfer window. But they are not the only club interested in the defender and are, in fact, facing stiff competition from Italian champions Inter.

However, the report suggests that the Magpies are looking to gain the upper hand in the chase by launching a lucrative new offer in an attempt to lure the German to the English shores next month.

They are aware of the fact that Inter are only looking for a Bosman move for Ginter in the summer, so it appears NUFC are prepared to take advantage of their financial firepower to land the Gladbach defender in January.

It could be a massive boost for Howe, as his Newcastle United side has recorded one of the worst defensive records in the league this term. They have conceded 30 goals in 15 matches and are second-bottom in the league table.

The Magpies will be hoping that the potential addition of Ginter can add some much-needed quality at the heart of the club’s backline. The former Freiburg starlet has made a name for himself with his dogged defensive style and his ability in the air.

With almost 300 Bundesliga appearances to his name and the honour of winning the FIFA World Cup and DFB Pokal, he brings a wealth of experience to the table as well, making him the ideal man to spearhead the Newcastle United defence, at least during the second half of the campaign.

Matthias Ginter is unlikely to cost a fortune either, as his current contract at Gladbach expires at the end of the season. The Foals are experiencing a financial crisis as well and wouldn’t mind offloading their star defender for a cut-price deal in January in order to avoid a Bosman deal in the summer.

Newcastle, though, have no shortage of alternatives. While they are eyeing Ginter as the man to add experience and quality to the team, Eddie Howe is also eyeing a reunion with Bournemouth starlet Lloyd Kelly, although the centre-back is also a target for Liverpool.
