Manchester City are reportedly interested in Arsenal’s Nuno Tavares, who only moved to the Premier League in the summer.

According to ESPN, Manchester City are interested in Arsenal defender Nuno Tavares as Pep Guardiola demands a new left-back to replace Benjamin Mendy.

The Manchester City squad might look complete in every position, but Mendy’s situation has opened up an issue in the left-back slot. The Frenchman does not have a future at the club, leaving Oleksandr Zinchenko as the only proper left-back in the side, with Joao Cancelo, a right-back by trade playing most games in the opposite flank.

The Portuguese international’s versatility has kept Zinchenko out of the side so far, although Guardiola does not see it as a long term solution. The Manchester City manager is seeking someone young and dynamic enough to fit into his plans.

As a result, Guardiola now has his eyes on Nuno Tavares, who has been a revelation in the ongoing season. The Portugal youngster was only signed this summer from Benfica and has played a significant role in Arsenal’s rise this season.

His displays prompted Mikel Arteta to start him in six consecutive Premier League games ahead of regular starter Kieran Tierney. The former Benfica starlet has surprised many with his dynamic displays, which gave Arsenal a different option from the left-back role.

Tavares has pace to burn and has been superb with his deliveries into the box. He is a different player to Tierney and holds a much higher ceiling on his development.

Guardiola reportedly likes the idea of Tavares playing for Manchester City, who could make an approach for the Portuguese star. It remains to be seen if Arsenal will be interested in parting ways with a player who has shown so much promise in such a short period. Indeed, Tavares has received widespread praise for his performances so far and is expected to challenge Tierney for a place continuously.

As for the interest from Manchester City, it will take a huge bid from the Premier League champions to convince Arsenal to make the sale. Either way, the Gunners are not expected to entertain any offers in January, although discussions could occur in the summer when the market is wide open.
