Newcastle United are considering making an offer in January for Matthias Ginter as the German centre-back runs down his deal at Borussia Monchengladbach.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United are plotting a move for Matthias Ginter in the January window as Eddie Howe eyes defensive reinforcements to beat the drop. The German centre-back is looking to run down his contract with Borussia Monchengladbach, which is set to expire at the end of the current campaign.

Newcastle United are moving ahead with their plans to recruit heavily in the upcoming transfer window, as the club find themselves in a precarious position in the league. Following the completion of the protracted takeover led by a Saudi-backed consortium, the Magpies have had ambitious plans for January.

However, looking at Newcastle’s league position, they might find themselves in a tough spot on the table even before they could make moves in the January window. The Magpies are just a place above the bottom of the Premier League table, and with a difficult set of games between now and the end of December, things might look grim.

The new ownership and manager Eddie Howe are thus planning to invest in the squad in January and take the chance of protecting their status as a top-flight club. Their focus seems to be on strengthening their defence in a bid to stop leaking goals, which has led to their downfall so far in the season.

Newcastle have a few top targets lined up, although they are aware not all of them might prefer to join a relegation battle despite the money on the table. Lille’s Sven Botman is considered a key target for the Magpies, as the French side could accept a significant bid for their star player.

German international Matthias Ginter has now emerged among those considered by the Magpies for a January move. The Borussia Monchengladbach star has been a consistent performer for both club and country in recent seasons.

However, his contract with Gladbach expires at the end of the season, leaving him free to choose his destination from a host of interested clubs right from the January window. Next month, the 27-year-old can sign a pre-contract agreement with clubs outside of Germany before moving on a free transfer in the summer.

He certainly has the attention of clubs such as Barcelona and Inter Milan, who would love a bargain signing of Ginter’s quality. Now, Newcastle United have also emerged as a potential destination for the German international.

The Magpies are thinking of offering a reasonable transfer fee in January to tempt Monchengladbach into selling their key man. The decision will remain with Ginter, who could choose to stay at the club and move on a free transfer after the season.

As things stand, Newcastle will probably target a host of players that suit their game and the manager’s preference. However, with their status as relegation battlers, high-profile stars might opt against joining the Magpies, making things tricky for them heading into the January transfer window.
