Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale reportedly wants to return to former club Tottenham Hotspur when his contract expires at the end of the season.

According to a report from Fichajes, out-of-favour Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale is intent on securing a return to former club Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window of 2022.

Bale has been with Real Madrid since 2013, having joined from Tottenham in a mega-money deal. The Welsh wing-wizard enjoyed great success in the early years of his career at the Santiago Bernabeu before falling out of favour under former manager Zinedine Zidane. Injuries haven’t helped his cause, while there have been questions over his commitment towards the club as well.

Having been completely frozen out of the first-team picture under Zidane, Bale returned to Tottenham on loan last season. While he did not enjoy a lot of success, the 32-year-old enjoyed a productive campaign on a personal note, bagging 16 goals and three assists from 34 matches across all competitions.

Back at Real Madrid in the summer, Bale was brought back into the fold by new manager Carlo Ancelotti, and he started well, scoring once in three games before injury struck again. The ex-Tottenham winger hasn’t played for the Spanish capital outfit since August, although quite bizarrely, he was involved with the Welsh national team during one of the international breaks.

Nonetheless, Bale’s time at Real Madrid is set to come to an end in the summer, with his contract running out in June 2022. The Merengues have no wish to extend his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu and are waiting to get rid of his massive wages.

Reports last month indicated that new Tottenham manager Antonio Conte was keen on bringing the 32-year-old back to north London. Now, it is being claimed Bale himself is hoping to secure a return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when his deal with the La Liga leaders expires.

Tottenham are in the market for attacking additions amid question marks over the long-term future of Steven Bergwijn. They have been linked with several forwards, with Bale seemingly throwing his hat in the ring as he wishes to return to his old stomping grounds.

However, the report claims that the final decision was up to Conte and the Italian’s thoughts on the matter are not yet clear at this point despite previous speculations. It remains to be seen if Bale ends up returning to Spurs for a third spell with the Lilywhites come summer.
