Liverpool are reportedly looking into the possibility of signing Manchester City goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, who is currently away on loan at Portsmouth.

According to a report from the print edition of the Sunday Mirror, as relayed by TEAMtalk, Liverpool are considering making a surprise swoop for Manchester City youngster Gavin Bazunu, who is on loan at Portsmouth.

Bazunu started at Irish club Shamrock Rovers and managed six first-team appearances for the club before making the jump to Manchester City in the winter transfer window of 2019. The 19-year-old made eight appearances for the Cityzens’ Under-18 outfit and featured 14 times for the Under-23 side but is yet to play for the senior team.

Bazunu spent the last season out on loan at Rochdale, where he enjoyed a decent spell, before signing for Portsmouth this past summer on a year-long temporary deal. Since joining the League One outfit, the Irish shot-stopper has featured 19 times, securing seven clean sheets in the process.

A full international for the Republic of Ireland, Bazunu is held in high regard at the Etihad, and his performances seem to have made a serious impression on Liverpool, who are now looking to capture his signing at the end of the season.

Jurgen Klopp & co. have their goalkeeping situation sorted with Alisson Becker as the undisputed first-choice while Caoimhin Kelleher, who happens to be competing for Bazunu at the international level, is a reliable backup for the Brazilian shot-stopper at Anfield.

But the report states that Liverpool are looking to sort out the goalkeeping situation over the long term and see Bazunu as an option to succeed Alisson in the years to come. However, signing the 19-year-old prospect will not be easy for the Merseyside giants as Manchester City are intent on keeping hold of the Irishman.

It is claimed that the Premier League champions are already looking to extend the young custodian’s contract despite his current deal running until the summer of 2024.

Once he returns from his loan spell with Portsmouth, Bazunu will find himself behind Ederson Moraes and potentially Zack Steffen in the pecking order, while his first-team prospects wouldn’t necessarily improve at Liverpool either. So, it will be interesting to see what the 19-year-old decides to do, should the Reds approach him come summer.
