Chelsea and Tottenham have reportedly made an approach for the signing of Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele on a free transfer next year.

According to a report from Spanish publication Super Deporte, Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele continues to attract interest from some of the biggest clubs across Europe, with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur making an approach for his signing.

Dembele has been with Barcelona since 2017 when he signed from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth more than €100 million as a replacement for Neymar. The 24-year-old has endured a torrid time during his spell at Camp Nou, with injuries and a lack of consistency hampering his development.

As a result, the Frenchman has attracted his fair share of criticism even though he has shown great potential. However, Dembele’s time at Barcelona could soon be coming to an end as his contract with the La Liga heavyweights runs out at the end of the ongoing campaign.

While Barcelona are desperately trying to tie him down to a new deal, Dembele has emerged as a transfer target for several top teams across the continent. There have been links to PSG and Juventus, while Manchester United have been constantly mentioned as a potential destination for the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner. Chelsea and Tottenham have also been linked and have made an approach for him.

Chelsea have a loaded attacking contingent with the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi, Christian Pulisic, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech, Mason Mount and Timo Werner all vying for the two wide attacking midfield slots. However, question marks have been raised over the futures of Werner and Ziyech of late, while Pulisic has also been unable to get going since his arrival from Borussia Dortmund.

So, there could be a space for someone like Dembele, who played some of his best football under the tutelage of current Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund. However, they will have to contend with competition from Tottenham Hotspur, who have recently registered an interest in the Barcelona winger.

Manager Antonio Conte is looking to add more quality to his frontline, and club director Fabio Paratici is believed to be a huge admirer of the French winger. With Steven Bergwijn not clicking of late and attracting interest from elsewhere, Tottenham could find room for a player like Dembele on their roster. If he stays fit over an extended period, he can be a fine signing for the north Londoners.

The report claims that both Chelsea and Tottenham have approached Barcelona through their directors over a possible move for Dembele. But with Juventus also in the hunt, along with several other clubs, the 24-year-old could spark a transfer war in the summer should he decide not to extend his contract with Barcelona. It will be interesting to see how the situation develops in the coming weeks.
