Tottenham Hotspur could land themselves a bargain if they convince Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele to join them for free next summer.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur ate plotting a summer move for Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele.

The Frenchman is currently in the final few months of his contract at the Nou Camp. Unless the Catalans can reach an agreement with him, the winger would be available to make a free transfer at the end of the current campaign.

Injuries have hampered Dembele’s time at Barcelona, who can be a world-class player on his day. The 24-year-old has made 121 appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring 30 goals and registering 21 assists in the process. To put his injury troubles into perspective, Dembele has missed 103 games simultaneously.

Dembele’s situation has garnered attention from many clubs, including Manchester United and Newcastle United. Tottenham Hotspur have now entered the fray and hope to land the player for themselves next summer.

Spurs’ Managing Director of Football, Fabio Paratici, is a fan of the player and tried to sign him while at Juventus. The 49-year-old appears to be keen to bring the Frenchman to north London and give Antonio Conte the tools to work with. Earlier this year, the Italian boss took over from Nuno Espirito Santo and appears keen to take the club back to the top.

While he possesses a talented squad, some changes are still to be made to get them to play competitively. Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United possess strong squads with considerable strength in depth. Tottenham may have lofty ambitions, but they do not have the players to back it up on the field.

One of the areas the Spurs squad needs reinforcing is upfront. Harry Kane and Son Heung-min form a formidable duo capable of terrorizing any defence in world football on their day. However, the supporting cast of Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Moura are inconsistent and haven’t yet produced a good run of form that lasts a considerable time.

Adding a player of Dembele’s talents would certainly add more bite to the Tottenham attack. With him potentially available for a free, Spurs signing him on a Bosman will ensure they still have money to spend elsewhere. Dembele, for his part, appears keen to stay on at the Nou Camp. However, speculation will continue to hover regarding the player’s future until he signs an extension. Whether Tottenham can take advantage of it remains to be seen.
