Premier League giants Liverpool are reportedly keeping a close eye on Lille forward Jonathan David.

According to French publication L’Equipe (h/t Sport Witness), Premier League giants, Liverpool are eyeing a swoop for LOSC Lille’s sensational young attacker, Jonathan David.

The Canadian international is one of Europe’s top young talents. David turned heads with his impressive showings for Gent before moving to Lille in 2020. He has since made 70 appearances for the French giants, scoring 25 goals and assisting five more.

The Canadian ace played a key role in Lille’s Ligue 1 win last season. Currently, 20 points off the top, and the chances of launching a successful title defence are extremely unlikely. Despite the team having lost a level, David continues to soar and has only seen his reputation enhanced.

His performances have not gone unnoticed on Merseyside, where Liverpool are keeping a keen eye on his progress. Jurgen Klopp’s side were linked with the player last summer but chose against making a move. They do not appear to have abandoned the interest altogether.

David’s contract with Lille runs until the summer of 2025. This gives them a major advantage when it comes to negotiations. Liverpool, however, have numerous reasons to be optimistic regarding a potential deal.

The Canadian ace is keen to compete at a higher level, something he will find unable to do at Lille. While they might have won the French top-flight last season, the chances of repeating the success appear very unlikely. Liverpool, meanwhile, are an elite side at the top of their powers. The Reds are top dogs in both England and Europe and can provide the 21-year-old with the opportunity he seeks.

Lille, for their part, requires money and consider David to be one of their saleable assets. Valued at €35 million, he represents excellent value for money and could be Klopp’s next great striker at Anfield. The fee is also right up Liverpool’s alley if one considers David’s potential. Should the Canadian fulfil his potential, the quoted fee would be classified as a steal.

To further add salt into the player’s relationship with Lille, David’s agent is at loggerheads with the club regarding unpaid commissions. Whether this works in Liverpool’s favour remains to be seen. An excellent finisher, David would thrive in a Liverpool system that creates numerous opportunities every game. The likes of Roberto Firmino are not getting any younger, and it is time that the next-gen of Liverpool heroes earn their scarves.

David certainly can fulfil those expectations. Several other clubs are also keen on securing David’s signature. How Liverpool can convince the 21-year-old to earn his stripes at Anfield remains to be seen.
