Real Madrid are reportedly facing stiff competition from Newcastle United in the race to sign Donny van de Beek from Manchester United.

According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Newcastle United are stepping up their efforts to sign Donny van de Beek. The Manchester United midfielder is also being courted by Real Madrid, but Barcelona have ended their interest in him.

Donny van de Beek joined Manchester United from Ajax in September 2020, arriving at Old Trafford as the marquee signing of that summer transfer window. However, the Dutchman has been anything but a key player for the Red Devils, struggling to no end under the tutelage of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who refused to hand him regular starts.

As a result, the 24-year-old has managed only 1,721 minutes of game-time at Manchester United, with most of his appearances coming off the bench. Such a situation had been forcing him to consider leaving Manchester United, although the departure of Solskjaer might change his mind and fortunes. Nevertheless, he has no shortage of suitors, with Real Madrid and Newcastle United particularly keen on signing him.

The interest from Real Madrid is understandable, considering Luka Modric is in the twilight of his illustrious career. With Isco surplus to requirements at the Santiago Bernabeu and Dani Ceballos likely to seek a move away from the club, the Spanish giants need to bring in an able signing at the earliest, thus making van de Beek a viable target.

On the other hand, Newcastle United have been reported to be ready to make an offer to sign van de Beek from Manchester United. And the Dutchman is certainly an option worth considering for the Magpies, who desperately need to complete an overhaul of their squad to turn their fortunes around.

To that end, van de Beek and Newcastle could be a match made in heaven, with the Tyneside outfit ready to offer lucrative terms to Manchester United and the player to snatch him away from the clutches of Real Madrid. Meanwhile, Newcastle and Real Madrid might be the only major teams in the running for the 24-year-old, with Barcelona ending their interest in him.

The Catalan heavyweights are focusing their attention on reinforcing their attacking unit instead of midfield, which is why they do not want to sign van de Beek at the moment. So, it looks like Newcastle could be leading the race to sign the Manchester United midfielder. It remains to be seen if he makes a switch across the Premier League or Real Madrid can claw back in the race to sign him.
