Newcastle United have enquired about Renato Sanches, who is reportedly available to move from Lille in the January window.

According to Calciomercato, Newcastle United are exploring the possibility of signing Renato Sanches in the January window. The Portugal midfielder is set to move away from Lille, who want a sizeable transfer fee to allow their prized asset to leave in the next window.

Renato Sanches is already looking for his next club after feeling the need for another challenge. At Lille, he has been successful, helping the side win the Ligue 1 title last season. His agent, Jorge Mendes, is already looking for a possible new destination in the market, with plenty of sides casting admiring glances towards the 24-year-old.

Arsenal have been showing an interest in recent weeks, as Mikel Arteta continues to look for options to improve his midfield. However, AC Milan are also reportedly keen on the Portugal international and have tabled an offer with a sizeable salary package to lure him away.

There are many other sides from the Premier League who remain keen on the star, although a final decision could be made as we come close to the January window. Lille want to recoup a sizeable transfer fee of €35 million, the mooted price for the midfielder. Sanches’ contract at the French club expires in 2023, meaning Les Dogues might want to cash in on him in January to extract the best possible value.

Newcastle United have now shown an interest in securing the Portuguese’s services and might be willing to make a bumper contract offer for the midfielder. The sum would supposedly be much higher than what Milan had promised, which could become a key factor in Sanches deciding his future.

Eddie Howe is desperately looking for a midfielder who would improve his side in the short term. Sanches’ disastrous spell with Swansea might play in the manager’s head, although he has improved a great deal over the years. Newcastle certainly are in a good position to pay whatever fee it might take to convince Lille to sell the midfielder.

However, it will also depend on Sanches as he may not consider the Magpies the most attractive destination in the short term. He might be inclined towards bigger sides, while the Magpies’ relegation battle might not work in their favour either. However, considering the massive contract on offer, the ex-Bayern Munich star might consider taking the gamble and head to St. James’ Park.
