Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen has reportedly emerged as a transfer target for Serie A giants Juventus, with his contract expiring in 2022.

According to a report from Calciomercato, Juventus have become the latest entrant in the race for the free transfer signing of Chelsea defensive ace Andreas Christensen, who is in the final year of his contract with the club.

Christensen joined the Chelsea youth academy from Danish outfit Brondby in 2012 and has had to bide his time to get a proper run in the first team. The 25-year-old made a huge impression during his two-year loan stint with Borussia Monchengladbach between 2015 and 2017 but has been made to wait for his opportunities at Chelsea.

The fact that he has made 30+ appearances in all competitions in a single season just one time for Chelsea indicates that the Dane has had to share game-time constantly despite his solid displays. It has been no different this season either, with the 25-year-old having been in and out of the team, competing with Trevoh Chalobah and Cesar Azpilicueta for a spot in the lineup.

Naturally, speculations over his future have been mounting as a result, especially because Christensen’s contract will expire at the end of the season. The Danish international has been linked with a move away to some of the biggest clubs in Europe, with Barcelona taking an interest while Real Madrid are also keen.

Now, it seems like Juventus have also entered the picture to sign Christensen on a free transfer from Chelsea at the end of the season. The Bianconeri are going through a tumultuous period, and changes could be made in the summer as they look to usher in a new era at the Allianz Stadium.

Defensive stalwarts Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci are not getting any younger and will need to be replaced while Matthijs de Ligt’s future has been called into action, with Chelsea themselves interested in the Dutchman. So, a move for someone like Christensen would make a lot of sense for Juventus, especially on a free transfer, considering their financial plight.

But with intense competition for his services, it will be anything but straightforward for the Bianconeri to add him to their roster in the summer of next year.
